Insurance for residential remodeling contractors
Working inside someone’s home brings responsibilities that do not appear on a simple list of tools and payroll. We help remodelers review insurance around the projects they take on, the people doing the work and the contracts they sign.
The projects you take on
Describe the work, not just the job title
Kitchen and bath renovations, whole-home remodels and additions can involve different operations. A useful insurance review starts with the mix of work you perform, what you subcontract and whether the homeowner stays in the property during construction.
Tell us about structural changes, roofing, excavation or other work that goes beyond interior finishes. The description of your business on the application needs to reflect the projects you actually accept. A quote based on an incomplete description may not be a useful comparison.
Coverage around the job
Review liability, property and your crew together
General liability, workers compensation, commercial auto and tools or equipment coverage each address different parts of a remodeling business. For work in progress, ask who is responsible for arranging the appropriate project property coverage and what happens to materials before they are installed.
We will also discuss subcontractor insurance and any additional insured requirements in your contracts. A certificate is evidence of insurance; it does not rewrite the policy or resolve every contract requirement. Reviewing those requirements early gives you time to address a mismatch.
Before the next renewal
Bring a realistic picture of the year ahead
Share your current policies, estimated revenue and payroll, subcontractor costs and a description of typical projects. Include the largest job you expect to take on, your service area and any work you have added since the last application.
If a contract is creating an immediate insurance question, send the insurance section with your request. We can review that requirement alongside your existing coverage and discuss the available options.
